Indonesia considers banning X due to obscene content involving minors
Jakarta’s call for compliance comes amid mounting international scrutiny, following similar complaints in other regions regarding the platform’s handling of AI-generated material.
Indonesia’s Communications Ministry noted that preliminary investigations suggest Grok, the platform’s artificial intelligence tool, lacks adequate regulations to prevent the creation and distribution of pornographic content using real photos of citizens.
“This situation has the potential to violate the right to privacy and the right to one’s image, particularly when a person’s photo is manipulated or disseminated without their consent,” said Alexander Sabar, director general of Indonesia’s Digital Space Supervision.
The ministry stressed that all digital services operating within Indonesia must adhere to national laws, warning that failure to cooperate or continued violations could result in administrative sanctions. These measures could include cutting off access to Grok services and the X platform entirely.
Indonesian law prohibits the creation or dissemination of pornographic content, with offenders facing penalties ranging from six months to ten years in prison, as well as possible fines.
The warning follows reports from other countries highlighting the potential misuse of Grok to produce sexually explicit deepfake images of minors. Authorities emphasized that the platform must take urgent steps to prevent non-consensual and harmful content.
