Sixteen Reported Dead in Indonesia Flash Floods
Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported Tuesday evening that the deluge left at least 22 people wounded and forced 682 residents from their homes after torrential waters struck the Siau Tagulandang Biaro Islands Regency on Monday.
According to the agency's official statement, government officials have imposed a 14-day emergency declaration effective Monday, empowering regional authorities to deploy exceptional response protocols, including personnel deployment, equipment allocation and emergency relief operations.
Violent floodwaters tore through multiple sections of the island district after intense precipitation, destroying residential structures, critical infrastructure and community facilities.
Emergency response crews continue scouring affected areas for the three people still missing, the agency confirmed.
The Southeast Asian nation routinely faces devastating flash floods and mudslides throughout monsoon periods, driven by torrential downpours and geologically unstable landscapes.
In a separate crisis, flooding across Sumatra Island beginning in late November has claimed at least 1,178 lives, with 148 people still missing, disaster agency records show.
