Indonesia, South Africa Agree to Expedite Defense Agreement
In Jakarta, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto hosted Ramaphosa for high-level bilateral discussions aimed at boosting collaboration in trade, defense, and other strategic sectors.
Following Indonesia, Ramaphosa plans official visits to Vietnam and Malaysia to further diplomatic engagements.
At a joint press briefing, Prabowo emphasized the positive outcome of the talks: “Good discussions today concerning their bilateral relations.”
He elaborated, “We understand that we would like to take steps to have a perhaps preferential trade agreement or Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in this period of economic, international economic uncertainties.”
The Indonesian leader also confirmed both nations’ commitment to accelerate the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in 2023.
Ramaphosa highlighted the mutual goal of strengthening ties, stating, “We agreed on the need to increase trade between our two countries,” and expressed anticipation for welcoming Prabowo at next month’s G20 summit in South Africa.
The South African president further addressed global challenges, focusing on the Gaza conflict and underscoring the importance of multilateralism and peaceful dialogue.
“We exchanged views on efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and secure a just and lasting peace that realizes the aspirations of the Palestinian people for self-determination that should result in a two-state solution,” Ramaphosa said.
Ramaphosa is set to leave Jakarta Thursday for a two-day visit to Vietnam before heading to Malaysia from October 25 to 28, where he will attend the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit as Guest of the Chair.
