Lewotobi volcano eruption results in thousands of evacuations
(MENAFN) Authorities in southern Indonesia have evacuated and displaced thousands of residents following eruptions of Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano in East Nusa Tenggara province, leading officials to raise the alert level to its maximum.
The volcano erupted on Tuesday and Wednesday, with ash plumes reaching as high as 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) into the atmosphere on Wednesday, according to the Mount Lewotobi Volcano Monitoring Post.
The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure urged the public and tourists to avoid the eruption site and follow official guidance.
This volcano has a history of deadly eruptions, including one in November that claimed at least nine lives and left dozens injured. Lewotobi Laki-Laki, standing at 1,584 meters (5,197 feet), is part of a twin volcanic system alongside Mount Lewotobi Perempuan in Flores Timur district.
Indonesia, located along the Pacific’s Ring of Fire, is home to 120 active volcanoes, making it one of the most volcanically active countries in the world.
