Indonesia Grabbles with Intense Floods
"The water was maybe more than one meter high. I already expected flooding, but not this high. Some of my belongings are buried in mud," he told media on Tuesday.
While Harmoko was concerned about his belongings, the physical toll of cleaning the sticky, dense flood mud with his wife weighed heavier on him.
The flooding struck following intense rainfall that drenched Jakarta and its satellite cities throughout Monday evening. The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that hundreds of neighborhoods and key roadways were submerged, with water depths exceeding 20 cm in some sub-districts.
According to BPBD, approximately 371 residents from five sub-districts in Jakarta were evacuated to designated shelters. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) revealed that nearly 9,947 people across Greater Jakarta were affected and displaced, with flooding impacting 2,348 homes.
Prior to the deluge, the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had issued a warning for possible coastal flooding from July 4 to July 13 and predicted ongoing rainfall over Greater Jakarta from Monday through Wednesday.
